Dr. Cranky dislikes medical television shows and always has. Even as a strapping young Cranky lad he thought them to be laughable and puerile. In fact, Mrs. Cranky (who is not at all cranky herself) forbids your humble servant from watching such programs because of his irritating tendency to argue with the television set. Well then, you might ask, if this is the case then why does the good Dr. House stand in as his profile picture?
Dr. Cranky has never seen House, MD and probably never will. So what is it about this particular portrait that he finds so appealing? First of all, although he is unable to comment on Hugh Laurie’s abilities as an actor, Dr. Cranky is impressed with the expression on Dr. House’s face. It perfectly captures the weary “shot out of a cannon” look particular to many in the emergency medicine trade, especially after a night shift. It also contains a hint of that “don’t f*ck with me” attitude which can be found in many of us who have spent too much time in the trenches. The third reason is more personal. Dr. Cranky has been told, by patients and coworkers alike, that he possesses a good many of Dr. House’s mannerisms. He was warned ahead of time that he should regard such comparisons as complementary. Intrigued by these comments, your host logged onto his YouTube account and watched various clips of the good Dr. House in action. To be honest, he doesn’t know whether he should feel complimented or appalled. Let’s just say that he’s curiously bemused.
There will be more to come regarding medical TV shows in a future post, but at present Dr. Cranky is about to watch Peter Sellers in the movie Being There with Mrs. Cranky (who is not at all cranky herself), the Cranky Daughter (who, like Mrs. Cranky, is also not at all cranky herself) and the Cranky Daughter’s boyfriend Ramon (his choice of pseudonym). The Cranky Dog (Sparky the Wonder Lab) shall also be in attendance. The Cranky Son has elected not to partake in the evening’s festivities and has chosen to play video games instead.
Dr. Cranky shall return soon, so tune in later this week. Same Cranky-time, same Cranky-channel.
